We investigate the functions of neural systems and the principles underlying their organization. To address these questions, we develop normative theories and use them to derive computational models. We work closely with experimental groups and design statistical analyses of neural and behavioral data.
Our primary focus is on sensory systems. We study how the brain infers properties of the environment, represents sensory information, and adapts to constantly changing conditions. Our work draws on tools from information theory, statistics, and computer science. The theories at the core of our research are substrate-independent, and we seek connections across different domains of biology to identify shared principles.
